The Japanese television station TBS has begun streaming a promotional video for the television anime adaptation of Masakazu Ishiguro's Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru (SoreMachi) comedy manga on Tuesday. The video had previously run during Tokyo's Comic Market 78 event this past weekend. The comedy story centers around Seaside, a slightly odd maid tea shop (kissa) in an otherwise ordinary shopping district of a mundane neighborhood in Tokyo. (Despite the addition of maids, Seaside is a traditional kissa, instead of one of the maid cafés made popular elsewhere.) Hotori Arashiyama works at Seaside and daydreams about being a high school girl detective. She, the other workers, and Seaside's few customers have various slice-of-life adventures. The anime will premiere in Japan on October 7.

Deadman Wonderland Vol. 3 Manga Review

This harks to what has continually proven one of the most interesting and presumably plot-relevant parts of the story, past blood-soaked battle stadiums, and that's slow unraveling of Ganta's childhood. In this volume he remembers enough to know that Shiro was a part of his past and they used to play together as children. We see some short flashbacks to his childhood friendship with her, which is much the same as it is now in terms of their relationship. Meanwhile in the present day however, readers get to see Shiro away from the main group, exhibiting some major MPD that's both severely creepy and indicative that some of the mysteries Ganta would like solved are about to collide in a way he's not going to like.

At first, I was concerned that Keima's mission might mean that he's inadvertently leading these girls on, only to leave them hanging in subsequent episodes, but if the first episode's any indication, he's just giving these girls the shoulder they need to lean on. The World God Only Knows may sound silly, but I'm willing to give this a few more episodes. It's cute and funny, and despite some of the overused gags, it's a new take on an old genre.

Squid Girl has come to the land from the depths of the sea to conquer humanity for its pollution of the ocean. Unfortunately she ruins the first house she uses as an invasion base and has to work to pay for repairs. Of course, she can't overcome the Aizawa sisters who manage the house, so who knows whether she can subjugate humankind.

Fortune Arterial: Akai Yakusoku Episodes

Fortune Arterial's story revolves around the male protagonist Hasekura Kouhei, who transfers into a prestigious public school in the style of an English six-year school encompassing junior-high and high school students. The school is on an island named Tamatsu Island off-shore from mainland Japan, and the only way to get there is by boat. Soon after transferring, he discovers that one of the student in the class next door to his, Sendou Erika, is in fact a type of vampire.

Hiro moves to a new town, following his older sister who recently found a job there as a live-in housekeeper. And is promptly killed in a traffic accident. Luckily (or not) his soon-to-be corpse catches the eye of a passing beauty in gothic attire. Her name is Hime and she is the daughter of the king of all monsters. On a whim she resurrects poor Hiro, who soon discovers that not only will he be living with her (guess who hired his sister?), but that he is now a half-immortal guardian who will rejoin the ranks of the corpses unless he gets regular infusions of her blood. Even with the help of a cute and monstrously strong little girl android, being a hapless loser he makes a rather poor undead soldier, and the princess has a host of enemies, caught as she is in a vicious supernatural struggle for succession. The procession of werewolves, crazed scientists, invisible men, and creatures from black lagoons soon proves more than an immortal zombie loser can handle. xxxHOLiC Vol. 10 manga review
Fans of xxxHOLiC might open this volume and think they're getting another one of the so-so story arcs where Watanuki runs off doing chores and learns new factoids about the spirit world along the way. What a pleasant surprise, then, to see that he eventually learns much more, not about the spirit world, but about the very people who love and care for him. Himawari, who had been near-useless for so long (even to the point of being the least favorite character for some) finally gets her chance in the spotlight, proving that every person in Watanuki's life has a purpose after all. This is one of the most touching and dramatic volumes in the series, taking its characters to a new level of depth that few would have ever expected.

ADV has struck gold with this title! Although almost unheard of in the fan community, Princess Nine is an emotional and visual marvel to behold, with realistic characters, emotions, and themes.

In a Japan where women still only hold a small, tenuous foothold in society, Director Mochizuki created a very strong positive anime about women. Using sports as the medium, Mochizuki uses Princess Nine to encourage young women to be unafraid of life, and to believe in themselves. A strong sense of value is placed on family in this series; both Ryo and a teammate, Koharu, want to support their families, and even argue against joining the baseball team. However, Mochizuki skillfully weaves the story around the characters and creates an amazing blend of compassion and friendship which lead them to follow their dreams.

She arrives, still clad in her school uniform, and sizes up the situation. The Dolphins are batting, with bases loaded. With 2 outs, the Wild Cats are up by 1 point and only need to strike out one batter to win. After three loopy "warm up" pitches, Ryo proceeds to strike out the Dolphin's batter. This would've been a normal game, except that we see a mysterious woman watching the match.

Unfortunately, Oh! great's panties-on-the-head taste in humor (that's on page 1 folks) continues to insert its hammy fist into far too many scenes. As fun as the series is, the humor, at best, only succeeds about fifty percent of the time, and the rest of the time is just interfering.

More than simply being crucial to the success of the fight sequences (and the manga in general), Oh! great's artwork is the wellspring from which every drop of quality in this manga originates. His grasp (instinctive or otherwise) of the importance of integrating his story and his art is as sharp as ever. Images bring real life to the otherwise standard story, and the story lends impact to the images. While it is pure skill with a pen that provides the details of Inuyama's close encounter with the semi (Oh! great's rendering of Inuyama's impressive physique makes the scene almost believable), it is Inuyama's selflessness and the inevitable consequences of the encounter that make it so awe-inspiring. The confluence of emotion and art transmutes a two-page spread of Itsuki's face from a portrait to a chilling challenge. Oh! great is also a master of action. Fluid, dynamic panel structures create visual excitement without ever being confusing, he excels at drawing and creating movement cinematically, he doesn't hesitate to draw complicated settings so that character placement and fight geography are crystal-clear, and impeccably timed one and two page spreads highlight important actions and provide slo-mo pauses in the action. On a purely aesthetic level, his art has a clean, cold beauty and (essential in any action story) a mastery of the functioning and proportions of the human body. And not just female bodies (bad boys, get your minds out of the gutter). Inuyama is a fantastic visual creation who effortlessly shifts from silly to frightening to sexy, all while sporting pompadour that would shame an entire convention of Elvis impersonators.

Adventures of the Mini Goddesses

Being very light in nature, the character designs for Mini-Goddesses is overly cute. Approaching the super-deformed or chibi style are the designs for each of the Goddesses, Belldandy, Urd and Skuld. Colors and backgrounds are bright in nature, without a lot of detail to cloud the picture.

Both the Japanese and English soundtracks are playing for laughs. The casts on both sides are small, due to the limited number of characters running around. Scriptwise, the English track stays fairly close to the Japanese track with substitutions made for mouth flaps and some of the more hard to follow Japanese puns. Overall, the English cast performs well carrying out the overall fun tone of the show.

Just because its Japanese Anime doesn't mean it has to be serious and dramatic in nature? Take the case of The Adventures of Mini-Goddess. These 12-minute adventures are strictly about entertainment. There are no major villains, no underlying back-story and no limits to the zaniness that Skuld and Urd get up to with their rat friend, Gan-Chan. The first volume in this new DVD series, The Gan-Chan Files, contains the first 12 episodes. Each one features the goddesses trying to help poor Gan-Chan with the typical zany results viewers would expect.

Extras wise, the disc is rather weak. There's only a color gallery featuring Belldandy. Of course, the lack of extras is made up for by the fact that the disc contains 12 episodes, which would be equivalent to 6 regular time episodes.

For the most part, each of the stories told on this disc are self-contained. They all have the same basic plot line, with Gan-Chan wanting something and Urd and Skuld trying to help him out. Of course, despite their good intentions, something always seems to go wrong and Gan-Chan usually ends up having to be saved by Belldandy. Despite this obvious predictability, each story remains fun in tone and is always worth a few chuckles. At other times, things are laugh out loud funny as Skuld and Urd just cause more trouble for Gan-Chan. There are quite a few Japanese puns and other pop-culture references, but nothing a savvy audience couldn't keep up with.

I had a tough time narrowing down the next 15 entries in my favorite anime openings list. Some of the more obscure shows started to pop up in my head, so I had to reorganize the order.

I just started this series. Beck has one of the catchiest tunes I've ever heard. Once people hear it, they can't stop thinking about it. They'll hum it in their sleep. They'll sing the words.

The video is a fun montage of a road trip across the United States. It looks pretty cute too. When the main characters sing "I was born to hit in America," the cinematography reminds me of "A Hard Day's Night." The camera cycles through head shots of all the characters, as if they were going to be the next big Japanese superstars.

All 26 episodes of the series are available in a box set for only $13. It's a really entertaining series, if rock music is your type of thing.

14. Fullmetal Alchemist, fourth opening

As much as I liked all the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood intros, the fourth opening of the original series truly captures the dramatic scope of the Elric brothers' journey. I like to call this the epic standing-in-place intro, because most of the characters are just staying in one place, as the camera pans around them.

Yet, the animators make it look incredibly cool. They put in all these warm lighting effects. Sometimes the characters' hair is blowing all over the place, just to make them appear larger than life. The animators also put in all these quick panning effects on the background, to make everything look even more intense. It's a cheesy opening, but all the effects can really hook people in.

With all that said, I'd prefer to watch the remake, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's a show that lasts over 50 episodes. It's available for only about $35 per box set on amazon.com.

13. K-On!, second opening

This is probably the flashiest intro, with special effects and computer animation all over the place. During the chorus, the camera literally rotates at 100 miles per hour around the band members.

For whatever reason, the director wanted to capture the hyper-kinetic power of cuteness in K-On with a whole bunch of insane computer animation shots. Honestly, he's overdoing it a little. However, the video is so manic that it lures anime fans right into it.

The American anime publisher for the series hasn't announced any new information, but fans should expect Bandai to release it next year. Hopefully.

12. Spice and Wolf, season one opening

Although many shoujo shows tried to capture people's attention with a wide variety of computer animation tricks, my favorite shoujo opening is from a recent series, called Spice and Wolf. For an animated music video, this is a surprisingly simple montage. It's set to one of the best songs I've ever heard.

Most of the imagery relies on the marvelous landscapes in the series. It includes old European villages and beautiful grassy meadows. If that didn't catch anyone's attention, there's quite a few interesting fan service shots of a naked wolf girl.

The season one box set is still at an expensive $60, but on Black Friday the price fell to $25 on rightstuf.com. I guess the website is keeping the price low for the holidays, because it's still at the same price. For an epic 13 episodes, this is a great bargain. Check it out.

11. Wolf's Rain opening

This intro has an 80s-style smooth jazz tune that sounds pretty stylish with Wolf's Rain. It is still one of the best intros by the anime studio Bones, complete with flocks of black crows and towering skyscrapers.

The background images of overcast skies and heavy rain truly reflect the melancholy, murky tone of this show. Even the wolf characters' have an 80s fashion sense that really fits their tough, loose lifestyle. The main character wears a leather jacket to protect him from the changing weather. The other characters dress in black, as if they are anticipating a funeral at any time.

The Wolf's Rain perfect box set is available on amazon.com for only $33. It's probably the best Bones series that anyone will ever see.

Synopsis
The story centers around Tsukimi Kurashita, a huge fan of jellyfish (kurage, a wordplay on the "kura/mi" and "tsuki/ge" in her name) and a girl who moves to Tokyo to become an illustrator. She moves into "Amamizukan," an apartment complex that is full of fujoshi (diehard female otaku) with a no-men-allowed rule. However, one day, Tsukimi invites a stylishly fashionable woman to stay at her room at Amamizukan — only to discover that the guest is not who "she" seems to be.

Yosuga no Sora

Review: How to ensure that cutting the sex out of your adult game won't tank your anime adaptation? Leave the sex in. After the death of their parents, Haruka Kasugano and his damaged sister Sora move to a small rural town that they once frequented as children. Haruka is determined to make the most of the move and wants very badly for Sora to do the same, but she's mortified by the lack of modern amenities like internet access and supermarkets and for reasons that remain unclear cannot bring herself to attend school or even leave the house much. Which leaves Haru to his own devices most of the day, which in Haru's case means charming the pants off of most of the local female population. Unfortunately for them, and Haru, Sora has no intention of letting anyone else have her brother.

Keeping the sex in Yosuga definitely has its benefits. It puts some real danger in the series' potential romantic entanglements, and the sexual tensions lead in some very disturbing directions, none of which the series shies away from. Haru and Sora's too-close relationship begins as merely creepy, but once the show introduces explicit sexual overtones, beginning with a very wrong childhood kiss, and you get something authentically unsettling. That fearlessness can make it rather easy to overrate Yosuga. The genuine shock value of Haru and Sora's relationship distracts from the ludicrously aboveboard harem-building that makes up the rest of the episode, and the frank sexuality of some of the other girls hides the fact that they all fit too easily into prefab character moulds like "the girl next door," "the class president," or "the heiress." If you really must have an unsettling romance, you'd be better served by visiting (or revisiting) Koi Kaze, which combines true fearlessness with razor writing, beautiful sentiment, and plenty of intellectual muscle. Leave this one for those with the stomach for its harem plotting.

Most importantly of all, the story chose its main character poorly. Neither Makina nor her companion monk Keisei are the focus here, despite the fact they are solid foils for each other and compelling in their own right. No, the mantle of protagonist is carried insufficiently by the tween brother, Ouri, and a ghost-cat of unknown nature that follows him around and speaks in riddles. Even as the so-called lead, Ouri is edged out by a plethora of one-note characters that hog half an episode before awkwardly inching aside as if to apologize for taking up space…and they are still more interesting than him. Really, the cat is more useful than Ouri, because unlike his feline friend, it's not clear at all what Ouri's role is here until the end of the season, in an episode where he barely appears.

Corpse Princess

It is also the best episode of Corpse Princess by miles and almost makes the long journey there worth every minute…almost. Episode 12 here is visually staggering, emotionally raw, and a game-changer in every way for a show that can be stagnant more often than stimulating. It's not a stretch to say it doesn't even feel like it's from the same anime in its exhilarating presentation.

So…is it a sign the second season is onto better things, with new direction and a new (or is it first?) set of definable antagonists? Only Kuro will tell, but until then, this cold offering is an acquired taste…if you like bland, colorful food, that is.

No, the problem here is that Corpse Princess never really starts. The episode where the otaku with superpowers runs around taking vengeance? It's here. So is the ladykiller who takes his fetish too literally, and so on deep into the show. What isn't here is any direction to it all, or even any dialogue prompted by logic or direction. (Some of the lines…most of the lines?...are painfully bad in and out of context.) It wouldn't be difficult to cut out the characters' names and place any given episode into other demonic adventures like Devil May Cry or Tokyo Majin. (All three series have episodes where rock/pop stars come back from the dead to pursue fame anew…this is actually a cliché now.) Wasn't there some kind of conspiracy surrounding the monks or a personal vendetta Makina had weighing on her conscience? The series betrays its own unique ideas by dumping them in a grave.

It's obvious where this series excels, and to aficionados of guts-and-glory, there's more than enough here to sate the eyes, so it may be more beneficial to investigate where it went wrong.

The animation for the series is a little under Gainax standard. Much like the duality of the story's execution, it's either fantastic, on fire, rapid, rounded and magnificent or…a few less complimentary adjectives. The budget doesn't devolve into chicken-scratch the further it goes like some other anime, but begins looking awful in episode one and may not look awful again until episode five or six, depending on its mood, perhaps. All in all: attractive more often than not, but it has its noticeable speedbumps that throw it into off-model chaos, even in the fight scenes.

The music isn't really the problem either. It's barely noticeable, slanting quiet when the story is all whispers and shadows, but ramping into choral hysterics when the gunfire is there to drown it out. It serves its purpose well. The voice acting is glaringly better in English than it is in Japanese, not because the Japanese is poor, (well…it mostly isn't,) but because the dub has no business sounding this good considering the dialogue here. Luci Christian achieves a unique timbre for Makina by speaking through what sounds like a clenched lower jaw most of the time. It's hard to describe, but this really does wonders for her character when she wavers, however subtly, and you can practically hear her lips tremble while she feigns being tough. It's unusually good for such run-of-the-mill material and this is true of all the actors in the dub. Even Aaron Dismuke does the best he can with nondescript Ouri. If nothing else, he sounds authentic, despite playing a character bland as the paper he's printed on. The Japanese seiyuu for many of these characters, particularly Ouri…well, if you can't say anything nice…the dub is recommended here.

On the other hand, this show is frightfully boring despite these elements…so something must have gone seriously wrong somewhere. When there's a fight on, the show is alive, from the episodic brawls with rotting bodies to Makina's tortured flashbacks that hint at a far more one-sided battle. Almost the moment the fight stops, the series is at a standstill, a big shambling dead body moaning a lot of inane space-filling lines from its noise-hole. (The fact that Makina explains everything about shikabane apropos of nothing is bad enough. The fact that she does this over and over makes it nigh-unbearable.)

Undoubtedly Gainax's most zombielicious outing, Corpse Princess doesn't do much else to set itself apart from the studio's other formative outings: There are boobs and there are explosions and to try and make sense of it is to miss the point entirely. The only question remaining is whether its razor edge is still sharp…and that's a tricky question.

On the one hand, Makina is every bit the corpse-killing warrior princess her stern image projects, not just another pretty face with unnatural combat skills flashing her underwear in all her close-ups. (Okay, the underwear part is still true.) She's a complex, conflicted and likable ice queen despite, and maybe because of, her faults. When she enters the fray, the results are always mesmerizing rather than cringe-inducing, though no less brutal for it. The undead, it seems, come in all shapes, sizes and gruesome demises. There are corpse nerds, corpse babies, and an SUV that eats people. It's bloody good fun from tooth-and-claw struggles to the blowouts that end with thousands of rounds emptied on the floor. The organization protecting these shikabane-hime is unique, dark and carnal. It's a recipe for a spooky, sexy time.

This first volume packs five action-heavy episodes full of typical samurai posturing and warriors getting soundly thrashed. The spotlight alternates between Yakumo and Miyamoto, each of which gets his fair share of lead time and butt-kicking opportunities, though Miyamoto does it with his sword and Yakumo does it with swift, precision martial arts moves. Yakumo's light-hearted, free-spirited personality is strongly reminiscent of another lovable simpleton, Dragon Ball Z's Goku, and contrasts sharply with the more serious, focused, and conceited Miyamoto. Both are equally shallow and straightforward in their portrayals, however. Iori is your typical spunky samurai wannabe, albeit a remarkably perceptive one, who does a bit of fighting and would do a lot more if he were more capable. Though she doesn't do any actual fighting in this volume, Shiori gets a good share of the screen time as the girl who was always raised as a boy and so doesn't know how to behave or feel as a woman, which gets her completely flustered when she starts to fall in love with Yakumo. She is the one main character who has shown any degree of depth so far, and the storytelling is always at its best when focused on her. Otherwise the main reason for the existence of the series seems to be to deliver rousing action scenes—although admittedly the first volume does that quite well.

It used to be so rare for the dead to come back to life and hunt the living, but unfortunately for the Kogun Sect, these superpowered zombies, known as shikabane, are on the rise again. When a person dies with strong regrets, otherworldly powers can seize their troubled corpses and bring them back to life as twisted, rotting immortals who despise and hunt the living. Thankfully, the Kogun Sect has a weapon against the shikabane: other shikabane who have made pacts with their monks and become “shikabane-hime” who will be forgiven their spite in both lives and accepted into heaven if they destroy 108 walking corpses in the name of the order, for only the living dead can kill their own kind.

One corpse princess, Makina Hoshimura, couldn't care less about getting into heaven, but holds a personal grudge against the gang of shikabane that resigned her to her fate: the Seven Stars. Her contracted monk, Keisei, assists her in her revenge for his own reasons, while his younger brother Ouri becomes fascinated with Makina and haunted by the world she is bound to by death.
