Shigurui: Death Frenzy DVD
At Sunpu Castle during the Edo Era, two twisted master swordsmen face off. One is the blind Seigen Irako and the other the one-armed Gennosuke Fujiki. Once disciples of the same master, the two arrive at Sunpu after a long and bloody history of mutual antagonism. Both once rose to the position of prized pupil to the demented but divinely skilled swordsman Kogan Iwamoto, Fujiki through iron-minded devotion to training and innovation and Seigen through his god-given instincts for swordplay. Despite his most valiant efforts, Fujiki is slowly eclipsed by Seigen. Kogan ultimately names Seigen as his successor, granting him his daughter's hand in marriage. But when Seigen is caught dallying with Kogan's supple mistress, the tables turn, beginning a lifelong rivalry that will see them wading hip-deep through a sea of corpses.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser's Cel-Shaded anime column reported that the Hawaii International Film Festival in Honolulu will feature screenings of two anime films, Redline and Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW, this month. The festival is being held October 14 to 24.
Redline is a racing drama created by studio MADHOUSE and directed by Takeshi Koike (The Animatrix's "World Record"; Iron Man television anime pilot). The story revolves around a major universe-wide race held only every five years and the people who attempt to win it. Redline opened in San Francisco, California on Friday, during the same weekend it opened in Japan. The film has been shown at numerous film festivals since Switzerland's Locarno International Film Festival in August of last year.
Directed by Koji Masunari, designed by Masashi Ishihama, and written by Hideyuki Kurata — the trio who created the Read or Die franchise — Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW is a science-fiction adventure in which a group of children are rewarded for a good deed by getting a trip to the moon, only to find themselves stuck in outer space. The film was screened at this year's Otakon in Baltimore.
In addition to these anime films, two anime-related live-action films will be screened. The first is the adaptation of Harold Sakuishi's manga BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, and the second is the live-action film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, based on Yasutaka Tsutsui'S novel Toki o Kakeru Shōjo. The novel also inspired the 2006 anime film of the same name.

Princess Resurrection Vol. 1 manga Review
The heart of the series is obviously meant to be the difficult position Hime is in, fighting for her life against her own siblings. And yet we're never allowed inside her head, making the emotional subtext slight at best. On the other hand, we spend plenty of time in Hiro's head, but he's better as a running joke than a character. Probably the most sympathetic character is Riza, a werewolf half-breed whose brother was killed by Hime, and at least half of her appeal is her abs (the other half being the overlay of anger and angst over her basically fun-loving core).

Princess Resurrection Vol. 1 manga Review
This is all entirely beside the point of course; no one reads something like this for existential human drama or delicate emotions. But were they present, it would help to distract from the series' marked lack of purpose. Supernatural assassins aside, the world of monsters is ignored outright, and the political struggles and social institutions behind Hime's current station and exile have yet to receive any elaboration. This is an introductory volume, so naturally one can expect more in the way of explanation on these points later, but that doesn't change the fact that there is no indication here of where, if anywhere, this series is headed. It's just a lot of Hime getting the better of monster nasties by hook or crook. As cool as she is (did I mention she uses a chainsaw?) she has trouble carrying even this one volume on her merits alone.

Princess Resurrection Vol. 1 manga Review
Yasunori Mitsunaga's artwork is heavy on detail, contrasts, and dark shadows and excels at moldy mansion, hollow hospital, dark woods kinds of atmosphere. Backgrounds are illustrated with meticulous care, as are vehicles, weapons, and tools. Hime and Riza are the center of the series' visual appeal, and Hime is a visual force all her own; a tea-sipping, cat-eyed hellion with a perpetual smirk, lithe physique, haughty royal bearing and a gothic dress that simply has to be hell to draw. And yet, for all its detail, fan-service and geometric precision, there's something strangely amateurish about it. Something in how characters' proportions get awkwardly off-model, in the vaguely unconvincing way that people move, in the over-reliance on speedlines, in the occasional ineffective transition.

This is another Del Rey manga that feels—in art reproduction, paper quality and presentation—like it's worth the eleven bucks it costs. Extras include a short humorous Princess Resurrection spin-off, (very) brief translation notes, and the usual next-volume preview.
Given a little more narrative momentum, and fewer failed attempts at horror, this series has the potential to be good light fun with a mean little macabre bite. But for now, it has all the direction and appeal of a headless chicken: it runs in circles squirting blood, and is good for a laugh or two, provided you're in the right frame of mind.

Shigurui: Death Frenzy DVD
Ah, feudal Japan: when men were men, violence was violent, and women were traded like sexual Pokémon cards.
This is violent, unapologetic sleaze, written by an expert sleaze-monger and animated with nauseating attention to every violent, sleazy detail. From the opening scene of a retainer pulling his own innards out, it's obvious where this series is going and what it is planning to do with its feudal setting. To Shigurui, feudal Japan isn't the admittedly merciless land of adventure portrayed in Akira Kurosawa samurai films. It's a moral wasteland populated by violent beasts whose one goal is to perfect the art of killing. And for viewers who like their entertainment gory, sadistic and full of gratuitous sex, it's heaven.

A heaven of spilled guts, dismembered bodies and torrents of blood, all stemming from an unending series of escalating sword battles. Manga-ka Takayuki Yamaguchi, the brain (for lack of a better word) behind the universally reviled Apocalypse Zero, this time grounds his outrageous violence in a semblance of reality, while director Hiroshi Hamasaki channels every hideous, gut-crunching impulse that he has into action scenes that find a kind of grotesque beauty in the show's celebrations of martial-arts S&M. The washed-out minimalism of the series' visuals works well in these scenes, exploding with hair-trigger suddenness into complex movement and gouts of red, red blood.
