That isn't to say that MeltyLancer is completely devoid of quality. It's an OVA series, animated by Gonzo on a very high budget, and the result is visually impressive. Despite the generally dull look of the show, the animation itself is fluid and very well done. The CG work isn't bad either; consider this show is pushing four years of age, and CG work has only improved in those four years. The DVD transfer is undeniably crisp and presented beautifully. Despite the generic production design, there is a considerable amount of eye candy to be had here, and if you're a fan of Gonzo, you may want to give this title a rent just to see them at their best when backed by a colossal budget. The dub is serviceable, but as with many dubs, it's hard to tell the females apart when they're speaking off-screen. You can't blame the voice actresses for that, since almost every anime female in every series is around 17 to 25, and there are only so many voice styles to go around. The two younger females in the cast sound like the same obnoxiously high-pitched woman in her late 20's who's struggling to sound like a little girl is voicing them. It's nearly impossible to tell them apart.

Science fiction is a genre in anime that's been mutated a thousand times, and this series seems like the long-lost cousin of the unpopular and forgotten Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko. But it lacks the creativity and mild entertainment that even Yamamoto provided. It's difficult to describe just how generic this series is. The design of the mecha, the space ships, the cursory characters, the costume design--everything is utterly forgettable and looks like it was lifted out of several similar-looking anime titles.

Review: Working!! is yet another show based on a four panel comic strip, and - wow – is it obvious. There seems to be pretty much no substance here, and sadly – for something that's meant to be a comedy – even less in the way of laughs.
Otaku Takanashi Souta finds himself working in a restaurant staffed by teenagers (i.e. like pretty much every restaurant in the world), mainly as he's getting all moe for Taneshima Popura – a 17 year old waitress that looks like a much younger child. Yeah, I know. But as much creep-out potential as that sounds like it might have, it's pretty much left alone in this first episode. In fact the show is so totally inoffensive and harmless that you almost wish they would focus on it a bit – perhaps then we could have a laugh at the helpless geek. A laugh at anything would be a start.
I might be being harsh after watch Arakawa under the bridge – which genuinely amused the hell out of me – but Working!! just left me cold in the chuckle department. If anything it reminded me of one of those live action teen comedy shows that they used to (and maybe still do, I don't know) show on Nickelodeon: totally tame, utterly inoffensive, and completely unfunny. But if that's your kind of thing then enjoy.

The tentatively named Special Disc will also include video comments from the cast and promotional footage. The limited first edition of the first volume will include a Toaru Kagaku no Railgun SS 2 novel by Kazuma Kamachi (the creator of the original Index light novels) and a bonus CD-ROM with the Toaru "Radio" no Index II web radio program in MP3. Every Blu-ray/DVD volume will bundle a novel volume.

It's hard to say much more without giving away too much of the plot, but this volume closes out with a strong, emotionally moving finish that explains why Little Miss Useless has stuck around for so long. Watanuki's infatuation with Himawari deepens in a way that few would have ever seen coming, and the things he does for her—as well as what his buddies do for him—say a lot about how friendship can emerge as a spiritual power to trump all other spiritual powers.

The road to Himawari's dramatic revelation begins right at the first chapter in this book, but few would notice it at first glance—it's a deceptive start, focusing on Watanuki running errands for Yûko like he always does. So yes, here's the pedestrian supernatural-mystery part, with its obligatory air of creepiness as Watanuki finds himself being watched as he carries out his chores. The road to Himawari's dramatic revelation begins right at the first chapter in this book, but few would notice it at first glance—it's a deceptive start, focusing on Watanuki running errands for Yûko like he always does. So yes, here's the pedestrian supernatural-mystery part, with its obligatory air of creepiness as Watanuki finds himself being watched as he carries out his chores. The "solution" to this particular mystery is dramatic enough, but it doesn't seem like anything special compared to what's happened in previous volumes.

There may have been a time, in the early stages of the series, when it would have been correct to label xxxHOLiC as just another episodic supernatural-mystery series. And sometimes that label still holds true, as in the first few chapters of this volume. However, the truth is that the story and its characters have developed into something much more, and we're not just talking about the Tsubasa crossover. Friends and foes alike have become vital players in Watanuki's dealings with the spirit world, and even the most useless main character—sweet, cheerful Himawari, whose sole purpose up until now was to give Watanuki fits of giggles—turns out to have an agenda. The real mystery, then, might be in finding out who else has a secret to hide.

The artwork in this series continues to impress with its simple but expressive style. Heavy shadows and sharp, sweeping lines create an air of mystery that few artists could ever hope to match. In fact, even graphic designers can learn from this perfect balance of contrasts: ethereal white on pure black; free-flowing curves set in trim rectangular frames; simple character illustrations against elaborate backgrounds. On a less abstract level, the characters also express a wide range of motions and emotions—one moment Watanuki will be throwing a comical fit (mostly because he gets picked on by everybody else), and the next he'll be staring in wonder when something mysterious comes his way. While not as creatively abundant as previous volumes—Yûko's wardrobe of extravagant dresses isn't as prevalent, and there aren't any strange new spirits to meet—this installment still offers plenty of visual delights.

The text leans towards authenticity here, with honorifics, references to Japanese food, and Yûko's favorite buzzword, "hitsuzen" (inevitability). A glossary helps to explain various points of language and culture, which of course are essential in a series so steeped in Japanese folklore. The stylish sound effects are left untouched, but the little translations placed next to them are so small that they can be easy to miss.
